Thinking about entering a business award?

Insider Insights with Business Awards Judge:

I’ve been on the judging side of things, and I can tell you — the difference between an average application and an award-winning one often comes down to a few key details. Here’s what the process looks like from behind the scenes, and how you can stand out.

The Award Entry Journey:

  1. Writing and submitting your application
  2. Being shortlisted for an interview
  3. Creating a finalist video or promo
  4. Attending the awards night
  5. Following up after the event

As a judge, we have very little control over any of the steps above. We just get to see what you submit. But, one thing is true – the better quality information you input on the above steps the more likely you are to win!

If you are completing an application soon. Here are some tips for you:

Top 12 Tips for writing your application:

  1. Put in the effort – one word answers won’t cut it.
  2. Tailor your tone to reflect your brand’s voice — whether you’re warm and friendly, bold and disruptive, or technical and precise.
  3. Context matters – don’t assume the judges know your industry inside-out. A little background goes a long way in helping us understand the impact you’ve made.
  4. If you use AI to write your answers – back it up with a real example from your own business.
  5. Read your answer and check it answers the question.
  6. Be sure to go into the detail, not long winded answers but details, e.g. if you are talking about your financials use figures. If you are mentioning customer service use your review ratings etc. Goals should always be SMART.
  7. Double check you have answered all of the questions.
  8. Break up your text, don’t use walls of words, make it easy to read for the judges.
  9. Include evidence and additional files.
  10. Check your grammar and spelling!
  11. If you quote something in the application then make sure this is true for what can be found online.
  12. Get your figures right throughout the entire document.
Social Media Updates

Submitting your application:

  1. Make sure you have answered all of the questions.
  2. Submit additional supporting documents if you can (if it says it is optional – definitely DO it.)
  3. Name your file, your company name.
  4. Ensure the pdf of your application is correctly formatted, unless it is an online form.
  5. Re-read your entire application and make sure you have ticked all the boxes/criteria.

Interview for the finalists:

  1. Be on time – ensure you are ready and waiting early for the interview. If it is online – be there in the zoom or teams waiting room.
  2. Introduce yourself, don’t be shy – build rapport and chat!
  3. Practice out loud – what sounds clear in your head might not flow as well when spoken.
  4. Have quick stats or key wins ready to reference off-hand — the stuff that makes judges go “Wow!”
  5. Prepare! Please ensure you have read your application carefully. Add some notes to it so you aren’t rehashing the content but adding to it.
  6. Respect the judges time – don’t waffle on.
  7. Answer the questions and get all of your points across.
  8. Reference external links – like your website if this would add extra depth to your answer. Or a social media campaign you have run.

Recording your video or promotional items for the awards:

  1. Keep it short and sharp (30–90 seconds is ideal unless told otherwise).
  2. Don’t forget clear audio – poor sound kills a great message.Prepare what you are saying in advance.
  3. Wear your brand – the colours or branded clothing.
  4. Look smart and the part!
  5. Show your personality!
Social Media Updates

Attending the awards ceremony:

  1. Why not book a table for your and your team – its a great way to celebrate your team efforts.
  2. Bring business cards (yes, still relevant!). You’ll likely meet potential collaborators, clients, or press contacts.
  3. Can’t attend – you might still win – send a representative instead if you can’t make it.
  4. Mingle and network
  5. Celebrate everyone on your table and at the event
  6. Don’t be a sore loser

Don’t just say it in on the application, say in it in the interview or panel discussion. But, also the proof is in the pudding. As a judge I will always check out the person or business via their marketing too… I look at the social media presence and content, website, reviews and anything else I can to give me a true and accurate picture of truth!

Following the awards:

Win or lose, leverage the experience. Post about it on LinkedIn, thank the judges and organisers, and share any feedback received.

If you didn’t win, ask for feedback. Some competitions offer this, and it’s gold.

Share the images from the event on your social media, via email campaigns and everywhere!

Final notes:

Remember — awards aren’t just about winning. They’re about learning, growing, and showcasing your journey. Put your best foot forward, and let your business shine.
